The Hudson and Beyond:
Photographs from Around the Bend and Across the Sea
The Beacon Institute for Rivers and Estuaries is pleased to present The Hudson and Beyond: Photographs from Around the Bend and Across the Sea, a fascinating view of the Hudson River and beyond through the lens of John Fasulo. His photographs from railroads, ice yachts, Coast Guard vessels, lighthouses and bridges offer a visceral interpretation of human transportation on and across water.
A Beacon native and a retired television cameraman who spent 25 years in both the field and studio for NBC, CBS, WOR and CNN, Fasulo is perhaps best known for his role as producer and videographer of the Hudson Valley documentary series “On the River” during the early 1990s at the former Kingston station WTZA. The show won multiple awards from the New York State Broadcasters Association for Best New York State Documentary Series. His still photographs have been published in numerous periodicals and magazines including National Geographic, Proceedings (the magazine of the U.S. Naval Institute), Railroads Illustrated (formerly CTC Board) and regional newspapers, among others.
“In my work as a TV cameraman, I had a job to do, and that was to record the news. While working, I often ‘saw’ powerful still photographs that I would have taken, were it not for the cumbersome electronic camera on my shoulder,” says Fasulo. “Beyond my personal fascination with railroads, bridges, lighthouses and river vessels, these photographs capture stories from historic, soon-to-be lost moments in time.”
