Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Ph.D., P.E.

REON Project Manager

Mohammad Shahidul Islam, Ph.D. holds a B.S. in civil engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, and his M.S. from the University of Tokyo. He earned his Ph.D. in environmental engineering from Texas A&M University, where he served as graduate research assistant in the department of civil engineering.

While at Texas A&M, Shahidul gained broad experience in real-time monitoring system design, sensor development, numerical modeling and database development for environmental applications. He applied that expertise to the development of the Coastal Margin Observation and Assessment system for Corpus Christi Bay under Jim Bonner, Ph.D., P.E., who now leads Beacon Institute’s River and Estuary Observatory Network (REON) initiative.

In May 2009, Shahidul joined Beacon Institute as REON Project Manager. His current research interests include field application of environmental instrumentation, implementation of cyber-infrastructure for real-time data acquisition and dissemination, environmental processes analysis, numerical modeling and economical sensor development for environmental monitoring. Shahidul, who works closely the IBM team designing the cyber-infrastructure for REON, is the genius behind the visualizations of river data on Beacon Institute’s website at data.php. Shahidul has recently published two papers showing an in-depth look at the Integrated_Monitoring_System and Fixed Robotic_Platform_System, similar types of REON monitoring platforms deployed in Corpus Christi Bay, which helped him to discover a new hypoxic region with no previous history of such.
