Help kick off this year's QuikSCience Challenge competition by joining us for an exclusive screening of the newly released IMAX 3-D feature film, Sea Monsters, A Prehistoric Adventure. Sean Phillips, director, uses unique stereoscopoic photo technology to create images for an ingenious adventure! Scientists from around the globe share their work from paleontogolical excavations revealing ancient mysteries of the ocean world.  Digiatlly animated "Dolly," a dolichorhynchops, leads the journey into the deep blue sea!

What is the QuikSCience Challenge?

The Beacon Institute is proud to partner with the USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies and Quiksilver, Inc. to bring the QuikSCience Challenge 2008 an exciting new event in science education, to the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state area.  The Challenge is a multi-faceted competition for student teams designed to spark their interest in science and the oceans. The Challenge also fosters leadership qualities in young people through environmental awareness and stewardship. There are two Challenge competitions, one for middle school teams (7-8) and one for high school teams (9-12).

Who is eligible?

All middle and high schools in NY/NJ/CT metro area are eligible. Each school may register up to two (2) teams for each grade level. Teams consist of six students and one adult teacher or mentor. All team participants must be at the same school.

What does the Challenge involve? When does it happen?

 

QuikSCience Challenge projects will include the creation of a new ocean science lesson plan for younger students, a community service project that is linked to the new lesson plan, a proposal for a research project (high school only), a written report/portfolio of the QuikSCience project, and a creative presentation (poster, computer generated, video, or multimedia). Exciting prizes include all-expense paid trips for winning teams!
